Nutritional Lab Tests

Proper nutritional intake is essential to overall health and provides the raw materials the body needs to function in the form of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals.

The typical Western diet contains too many carbohydrates and saturated fats, and is often low in nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Poor dietary choices can cause nutritional deficiencies and imbalances which may require dietary changes or nutritional supplementation. These tests help uncover the internal damage done by dietary indiscretion.

Several of our lab partners perform Nutritional Lab Tests. Please refer to the About the Labs We Utilize section of the website for links to all of our lab partners and a full list of tests performed by each lab.

For sample reports of some of the lab tests we order please see the links below.

Amino Acids Analysis - Plasma - Doctors Data

We offer 3 different labs to analyze and make recommendations for amino acid imbalances.

The Amino Acids Analysis tests measure up to 40 amino acids and intermediary metabolites. These reports include personalized amino acid recommendations based on amino acid levels, and functional vitamin and mineral cofactor recommendations based amino acid metabolism. Amino acids are important building blocks for every cell and system in the body, and require specific nutrients for metabolism and utilization.

Urine Fluoride - Urine - Doctors Data

Urinary excretion is the main route of elimination for fluoride. Fluoride is found in drinking water, tea and other beverages, toothpaste, refrigerants and non-stick coatings, as well as many prescription drugs including some anesthetics, antibiotics, antidepressants, chemotherapeutics, corticosteroids, asthma and allergy medications, and antifungals.

Fluoride is potentially toxic at high doses or with prolonged lower-level exposure. It may cause dental fluorosis, osteomalacia, ligament calcification, hypocalcemia, arrhythmias, neurotoxicity, headaches, vertigo, thyroid dysfunction and anemia. Recent studies indicate that fluoride exposure from fluoridated water correlates with increased risk of bone cancer in young boys, and hip fracture in the elderly. Fluoride is measured using an ion specific electrode.

Elemental Analysis - Whole Blood - Genova Diagnostics

The Elemental Analysis is a toxic exposure profile that measures blood levels of 4 common toxic metals and 8 nutrient elements. This profile is ideal for patients suspected of toxic metal exposure as well as common mineral imbalances.

Organix - Urine - Genova Diagnostics

Organix is a nutrition test that requires a first morning void (FMV) urine collection to measure organic acids. The report includes personalized micronutrient recommendations for vitamin and mineral cofactors as well as digestive support recommendations based on a patient's individual biochemical metabolism.

The Organix report offers:

  • Nutrient recommendations for key vitamins, minerals, and digestive support

  • Functional pillars with a built-in scoring system to guide therapy around needs for methylation support, toxic exposures, and mitochondrial dysfunction

  • Interpretation-At-A-Glance pages for patient education

  • Dynamic biochemical pathway charts for clearer understanding

Methylation Profile - Plasma * - Doctors Data

Normal metabolism of methionine is critical for cellular methylation of DNA, proteins and neurotransmitters. Aberrant methionine metabolism can occur in anyone at any age and can be associated with numerous health consequences including cardiovascular disease and cancer. The Methylation Profile provides a functional assessment of the phenotypic expression of common SNPs (MTHFR, MS, CBS) by evaluating the plasma levels of methionine, cysteine, SAM, SAH, homocysteine and cystathionine, and provides the important "methylation index," a ratio of SAM to SAH.

Vitamin D - Blood spot * - Doctors Data

25-Hydroxyvitamin D, known for its role in bone health and calcium absorption, also appears to affect immune function, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular issues, and other conditions. Vitamin D occurs in two forms—D3 is obtained from animal diet sources and through sun exposure, and D2 is obtained through vegetable diet sources. Both forms of the vitamin are used to fortify various foods and in supplements. Doctor's Data uses the gold standard LC/MS QQQ method to measure Vitamin D2, D3 and total Vitamin D.
