Level of aneamia before blood transfusion?

Hi

Does anyone know what level they would recommend a blood transfusion these days for aneamia. I have just had my operation cancelled due to my iron definency and have been told to take an iron supplement. My count is 7.9 now but they told me that they used to give blood transfussions for levels under 8.

Also, has anyone got any food advice that could give me an extra boost?

I was myself looking for the said answers for sometime. But then there were not many places from where I got help in this regard. So having no other option I have referred this question to an online doctor site and am again waiting for the response, I would definitely post his comments when I get the answer for the benefit of others. After all this is an important issue.
