In humans
there are 31 pairs of spinal nerves. In descending order from the most
rostral end of the spinal cord, there are 8 cervical (designated C1–C8),
12 thoracic (T1–T12), 5 lumbar (L1–L5), 5 sacral (S1–S5), and 1 coccygeal
(Coc1). Each spinal nerve exits the vertebral canal through an opening
called the intervertebral foramen.
