vanadium

What is it?

A MICROMINERAL named for the Scandinavian goddess of youth and beauty that's essential to animals and probably to humans as well. Its main function is to activate enzymes involved in FAT metabolism and nerve hormone production. Taken in pharmacological doses, vanadium not only blocks CHOLESTEROL production by the liver but also lowers blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Because vanadium is present in a wide variety of foods (seafood, soybeans and grains are especially good sources), deficiencies are unknown. Overdoses, on the other hand, are fairly common due to industrial pollution (vanadium can be inhaled, even absorbed by the skin) and it doesn't take much to cause trouble.

See the following monograph regarding vanadium.
