taurine
What is it?
One of the NONESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS. Rich in SULFUR, taurine is a constituent of bile and helps, among other things, to regulate heartbeat, develop nerve tissue and stabilize cellular membranes. Meats and fish contain plenty of taurine, the reason vegans are apt to lack it. So, too, are infants, especially preemies. To approximate the nutritional value of breast milk, most baby formulas are now fortified with taurine.
