manganese

What is it?

One of the metals the body needs in minute quantities for good health. Called a trace element or MICROMINERAL, manganese appears naturally in a variety of plants and animals. The human body uses it to activate enzymes that are integral to the metabolism of GLUCOSE and fatty acids; to build strong bones; to keep skin healthy; and to formulate urea. Although the body can't manufacture manganese, it is so readily available (in whole grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, leafy vegetables and tea) deficiencies are almost unheard of. On the other hand, those who persist in taking supercharged mineral supplements year after year or drink water contaminated with manganese do so at their own risk. Manganese overload produces dementia, psychiatric disorders that ape schizophrenia, and a debilitating neurological condition much like Parkinson's. Although there are no RDAs for manganese, the amount judged safe and adequate for adults is 2 to 5 milligrams per day.
