One of the nine essential
AMINO
ACIDS. It's found in all foods that contain complete
PROTEIN
(meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk and dairy products). The body's
inability to metabolize isoleucine (as well as
LEUCINE
and VALINE,
two other amino acids) causes maple syrup urine disease, so named
because of the sweet smell of the urine. It is a genetic disease showing
up in newborns, with symptoms appearing within four or five days. The
babies refuse to feed, become lethargic and may vomit. Failure to treat
the condition can lead to seizures, coma and death. Although this rare
metabolic defect isn't fully understood, doctors are able to treat it.
