glucose
Also known as: dextrose, blood sugar

What is it?

This CARBOHYDRATE is to the human body what gasoline is to the car: fuel. Glucose drives our bodies, providing energy for 1,001 physiological processes. The aim and end result of digestion are to break the food we eat down into glucose and other simple chemicals the body can put to good use. Glucose circulates constantly in the blood, delivering instant energy to the brain (it needs 140 grams, or nearly 5 ounces, of glucose a day to function properly) as well as to every other living cell. Excess glucose is converted to glycogen and stored in the liver and muscles for use as needed and, beyond that, is converted to fat and stored as adipose tissue. Glucose appears in the urine in diabetes mellitus.
