To guide consumers and simplify the new food labels (in force since
May 1994), the FDA developed a table of DRVs. Based on a
2,000-calories-a-day diet, the DRVs suggest amounts of
FAT, saturated fat,
CHOLESTEROL, CARBOHYDRATE,
FIBER, and
SODIUM generally considered to be healthful for anyone over the age of
four (assuming, of course, they are in good health). These figures, it
should be stressed, are not
RDAs officially established by the National Research Council, National
Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C. They are merely guidelines or
reference points. For example, if a food manufacturer claims that his
product is "high-fiber," it must contain at least 20 percent of the DRV
for fiber. Here's the table of DRVs the FDA has developed:
Although this table will appear on food labels, the values will be referred to as DAILY VALUES or DVs , not as DRVs. |
