What is it? |
| Arsenic trioxide, a powerful but poisonous and possibly carcinogenic
insecticide, has been widely used by farmers and citrus growers. And
arsenic, a toxic metal, frequently shows up in shellfish. Repeated
exposure to arsenic can damage the kidneys, impair brain function, even,
some researchers believe, cause cancer. Yet this deadly poison is now
considered a MICROMINERAL
essential to the metabolism of methionine but it is needed only in
minute quantities (see AMINO ACIDS).
