Obesity |
|
Today more than 70 million Americans are overweight. Obesity, particularly when associated with unhealthy patterns of body fat distribution, results in 325,000 preventable deaths each year in the U.S. and $100 billion in health care costs. In the last ten years, the incidence of obesity has increased from 25 percent to 32 percent - a level that may be considered epidemic.
Although about 30% to 40% of the obese claim that they are trying to lose weight or maintain weight after weight loss, current therapies appear to have little effect. Despite the plethora of popular diet books, commercial programs, and the government's own attempt at teaching primary care practitioners how to help their patients to lose weight, the results are disappointing.
Did You Know?
- Less that 20% of people who attempt to lose weight using traditional approaches achieve long-term success.
- The average dieting attempt lasts only 42 days.
- Less than 20% of people trying to lose weight follow recommendations to combine eating a healthy reduced-calorie diet with regular moderate-intensity physical activity.

The Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis
by Dr. Gary Farr 6/25/2004
I often tell my patients that the gastrointestinal tract is much like a carburetor in a car. Your digestive tract tract must take gasoline (your food), and then mix it with air (enzymes and other digestive juices). If this mixing process goes well, your car runs and doesn't cough or sputter. How efficiently your fuel burns determines to a large extent how many years you're going to get out of your car. Although a rather crude analogy, this principle does hold true for the human digestive tract. There are many points along the digestive where some "burning" process can go awry and cause seemingly unrelated problems elsewhere in the body. This article will discuss those various places and give you a very good detail of what can go wrong.
