The urinary tract is a little like a plumbing system, with special pipes that allow water and salts to flow through them.

The structure of the urinary tract includes: the kidneys, two ureters, (tubes leading from the kidneys to the bladder), and the urethra, a tube leading from the bladder to the exterior of the body.

The kidneys are bean-shaped, reddish brown paired organs, concave on one long side and convex on the opposite. The kidneys lie on the posterior (back) abdominal wall, the left kidney being slightly higher than the right. They are fist size, bean shaped, and weigh 5-6 ounces each. They each consist of an outer cortex containing glomeruli and tubules, and an inner medulla containing tubules. The 8-18 pyramids of the medulla open into calyces, which open into the renal pelvis, which will narrow into the ureter. Educate yourself about the kidneys.
